Dapo Guide Page

How to choose your first dapo

Choosing your first dapo (flow star) should feel exciting, not confusing. This guide will help you understand weight, size, shape and vibe so you can pick a dapo that truly matches your body and your style.

In our experience teaching beginners, weight matters more than size. If the star is too heavy, your wrists and shoulders get tired quickly, no matter how big or small it is. Once the weight feels comfortable, your body can adapt much more easily to different sizes.

What is a dapo (flow star)?

A dapo, or flow star, is a soft fabric star designed to spin, glide and float through the air. It has the satisfying feel of tossing a plate or frisbee, but with the safety and softness of cloth, making it ideal for beginners and playful movers of all ages.

You can play solo, pass between friends, or flow with a group. Along the way, you naturally train coordination, focus and body awareness, while enjoying a playful, almost meditative state rather than a “workout”.

Step 1 – Size & shape: 8 vs 16 corners

Both 8‑corners and 16‑corners dapos can be great for flow. The main things that affect how easy it feels are the overall size and, even more importantly, the weight – not how many corners it has.

8‑corners dapos

8‑corners dapos have a clean, simple outline that is easy to read while spinning. Many people enjoy them as an all‑round option for learning foundations, everyday practice and calm, meditative flow.

16‑corners dapos

When a dapo has more corners, it often feels visually “larger” and fuller in motion, even if the actual diameter is the same. The extra corners create a bigger presence in your field of view and a more detailed edge as it spins.

Right now, our 16‑corners dapos are on the heavier, more intense side. They create a big, powerful presence in the air and feel amazing once you already have some strength, timing and control in your flow. Because of their current size and weight, we recommend them mainly for intermediate and advanced players rather than as a very first dapo for most beginners.

If you are a complete beginner but already used to sports, dance or strength training, you can still start with a 16‑corners dapo – just be aware that your arms may get tired faster than with our lighter 8‑corners models.

Step 2 – Weight first, then size

Weight matters more than size

For most beginners, weight is even more important than size. A star that is too heavy will tire your wrists and shoulders quickly, no matter how big or small it is. A star in a comfortable weight range lets you practice longer, stay relaxed and actually enjoy the learning process.

This is why we design our dapos around a medium weight: enough momentum to feel satisfying, but not so heavy that it becomes a workout after a few minutes. Once the weight feels right for your body, the size becomes much easier to adapt to.

  • Lighter–medium (~320–350 g): Emerald Celtic Knot x Rainbow 333,Mystic Bloom, PrismOm Vortex, Classic Glowing Swirl– easier on the wrists, good for longer sessions.
  • Medium–heavier (~370–380 g): Circle Hong Kong Mandala – more “solid” feeling and stronger presence, but more intense on the arms.
  • 16‑corners (~380 g): Neon Vortex,Rainbow Tie-Dye Flash Swirl – powerful for experienced players who already have some arm strength and control.
  • Kids (~170 g): Star Spiral Dream – much lighter to protect small wrists and keep it fun.

In short: choose your weight for comfort first, then choose your size to match your hand length and arm reach.

How to think about size

Size is mostly about matching your body, not your skill level. People with longer arms and bigger hands often feel comfortable with a slightly larger star, while people with shorter arms or smaller hands may prefer something that feels a little more compact and easy to reach around.

As a simple guideline: if you have smaller hands or a shorter reach (many women and teens), a standard 64–65 cm dapo is expressive. If you have larger hands or a longer reach (many men), the same size will still work well – the key is picking a weight your wrists can comfortably handle. Once the weight feels good, your body will quickly adapt to the size you choose.

Step 3 – Which type of player are you?

Everyone comes to dapo with a different body, background and intention. Choose the path that sounds most like you and we will point you toward the most suitable models.

Beginner flow seeker

New to flow arts or coming back to movement after a long break? We recommend starting with one of our 8‑corners dapos in a medium or slightly lighter weight. They are kinder on your wrists and easier to control than our current 16‑corners models, which are better suited to experienced players.

Recommended starter models: Mystic Bloom, PrismOm Vortex, Classic Glowing Swirl, Emerald Celtic Knot x Rainbow 333, Circle Hong Kong Mandala

High-energy mover

You enjoy dancing, moving your body and playing with colour, whether that’s at home, in the park or at the occasional festival. Choose bold designs and, if you enjoy a fuller visual, a 16‑corners star. Just keep in mind that our current 16‑corners models are heavier and are mainly recommended for intermediate and advanced players who already have some strength and control.

Recommended models: Neon Vortex, Psychedelic Rainbow, PrismOm Vortex.

Why every dapo has a central circle

Each of our designs includes a clear, palm‑sized circular motif or central “target zone” printed in the middle of the dapo. This intentional visual anchor helps your eyes and fingers stay oriented, so you always know where the optimal control area is.

When you are learning control‑focused skills like “pizza tosses” or “levitating vertical spin”, that central circle makes it much easier to see whether your fingers are staying inside the ideal zone.

New to dapo? Start with the basics

On your first day, you only need one simple move – like a basic figure‑8 – to start feeling the joy of dapo flow. You do not need advanced tricks to have a good time.

At the beginning, try holding closer to the center of the star so the path is shorter and less likely to bump your body, and then gradually move your grip outward as your control improves.

No matter which model you choose, give your hands and brain a few sessions to adapt. Your muscle memory will quickly kick in and your flow will feel more and more natural.
